Worked example

Single, $70,000, living outside NYC: federal ≈ $6,570, FICA $5,355, NY state ≈ $3,183 → take-home ≈ $54,892/year ($2,111.23 biweekly), a 21.6% burden. Toggle NYC residency and the city takes about another $2,280.

The NYC line — who pays it

  • Residents of the five boroughs pay the NYC resident tax (3.078%–3.876%) on all income — the top city rate starts at just $50,000 (single).
  • Commuters don’t: live in New Jersey, Long Island, Westchester or Connecticut and work in Manhattan — no NYC income tax (Yonkers has its own smaller surcharge).
  • The “convenience of the employer” rule is NY’s famous trap: work remotely from another state for a NY-based employer by choice, and NY still claims state tax on those wages — a key reason remote workers’ moves to Florida need real planning.
  • High earners — tax benefit recapture: above $107,650 of NY income, the state phases out the benefit of the lower brackets via a supplemental calculation. This calculator doesn’t yet model it, so results modestly understate NY tax at higher incomes (≈$480 at $150k, ≈$570 at $200k). New York also collects an employee-paid Paid Family Leave premium (~0.4% of wages, capped) shown on paystubs separately.

How this estimate is calculated

  • Federal income tax: 2026 IRS brackets with the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 married filing jointly), no credits or itemizing.
  • FICA: Social Security 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base + Medicare 1.45% (plus 0.9% additional above $200k single / $250k married).
  • Pre-tax deductions (401(k), traditional retirement) reduce federal and state taxable income but not FICA wages.
  • Results estimate your annual tax liability spread across paychecks — real per-check withholding depends on your W-4 and settles at tax time.

Frequently asked questions

How much is $70,000 after taxes in New York?

Outside NYC: about $54,892/year (≈$2,111 biweekly) for a single filer. As an NYC resident, roughly $52,614 — the city tax costs about $2,280 at this income.

What is the NYC income tax rate in 2026?

Four resident brackets from 3.078% to 3.876%, with the top rate reached at $50,000 (single) / $90,000 (married). It applies only to residents of the five boroughs — commuting into the city doesn’t trigger it.

Did New York taxes change for 2026?

Yes — the state’s phased middle-class cuts brought the lowest brackets down (3.9%–5.15% on the first ~$14k single), worth roughly $50–$100/year for most filers. The 5.4%–10.9% structure above is the 2026 statutory schedule.

I moved to Florida but work remotely for a NYC company — do I still owe NY tax?

Very possibly. Under the convenience-of-the-employer rule, wages from a NY employer are NY-source unless you work remotely out of the employer’s necessity (e.g., a bona fide out-of-state office). This is heavily audited; get professional advice before assuming the Florida rate.
